Displaying post dates: why Twitter forces you to think
Everyone just seems to love the way Twitter displays its post dates: 5 minutes ago, about 9 hours ago, etcetera. It’s one of those examples where everybody just copies everybody without giving it a second thought. And yes, it certainly has a nice tone of voice, and it looks really user-friendly. But it isn’t. It forces you to think.
Fortunately, it’s easy to improve this elapsed time notation. In this post, I’ll explain how to make it work, and I offer a php function that you can just drop into your project.

Twibble: How not to launch a paid version of your free app
If you don’t want to lose your users when you’re launching a paid version of your free app, don’t do like Twibble. Yesterday’s launch of their “full version” raised a lot of critique and chased away many existing users. And at the same time, they’ve also reduced the chance of attracting new users.
Data inzichtelijk maken: Weerkaartjes
Ik vind het altijd interessant om te kijken hoe je informatie zo kunt vormgeven, dat de data in één keer inzichtelijk wordt. In deze post vergelijk ik daarvoor twee weerkaartjes, en kijk ik hoe ze nog verder te verbeteren zijn.
Op de vernieuwde website van weeronline kun je onder andere per stad het de weersverwachting bekijken voor de volgende 48 uur. In deze post vergelijk ik dat kaartje met dat van de Noorse weersite yr.no. Die maakt de data veel beter inzichtelijk.
Dubbele ontkenning in TomTom’s Tolweg Tekst
Ik ben altijd gek op kleine details in interfaces. Vaak kunnen die namelijk net het verschil maken tussen iets wat wel werkt, en iets wat niet werkt. En iets wat vaak niet werkt is een dubbele ontkenning: die is altijd lastiger te interpreteren dan een bevestiging.
Tijdens mijn vakantie liep ik er zelf tegenaan bij mijn TomTom. Als ik een route plan waarin een tolweg voorkomt, roept de TomTom “Tolweg!” en geeft dan een scherm met de volgende tekst: “Waarschuwing: op de huidige route komen tolwegen voor. Wil je de tolwegen vermijden?” Met daaronder twee buttons: Nee en Ja.
Make your tables more readable with Value Based Styling
Do you find it easy to check out tables with lots of numbers at the first glance? Probably not. You can make this easier by applying styling to the table, based on the values of the data.
I have created a css/javascript solution that does this automatically. It is ready-to-use, but if you want you, can also customize it easily.
Improving interfaces using Greasemonkey: TweetDeckColorSchemes.com
TweetDeckColorSchemes.com collects all color schemes tweeted by TweetDeck users. However, the way they present the color samples doesn’t make it easy for you to pick a color scheme. So I created a little Greasemonkey script to improve the presentation.
How to unhide passwords – on your site and everywhere else
Masking passwords (i.e. showing ●●●● instead of regular text) can cause several usability problems. A good solution would be to leave passwords hidden by default, but to allow users to switch easily between bullets and text.
I have created some javascript to show and hide passwords on your own site, and a bookmarklet and a Greasemonkey script to help you toggle passwords on any other site on the internet.
